Our History

The Diocese of the Highveld was formed through a multiplication of the original Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg,^[1] which, in geographical terms, embraced the whole of the former Southern Transvaal Province of South Africa. The new diocese extends from the eastern edge of the Metropolis of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa, to the borders of the Kingdom of Eswatini. Apart from the urban and industrial areas, forming what is known as the East Rand, in which most of the parishes are situated, much of the Diocese is rural farming land, falling within the Province of Mpumalanga.
On the Feast of the Epiphany, 6 January 1990, the Diocese of South Eastern Transvaal, now Highveld, came into being. David Beetge was elected to lead the diocese; he died on 27 September 2008.

The Right Reverend Charles Mthetheleli May

The Rt Revd Mthetheleli Charles May was consecrated as Bishop of the Diocese of the Highveld on 12th September 2015. He is married to Tebogo, a Professional Nurse employed by Gauteng Health Department, they celebrated their 30th anniversary on the 21st December 2020. He has two children, a daughter, Siphiwe and a son, Thami. Bishop Charles is a keen sportsperson and enjoys watching sport on television and at stadiums. His first love is soccer, however, he had to make a decision between professional soccer and the ministry. He occasionally plays golf and enjoys reading all kinds of books for mental stimulation and for growth. He also walks to keep fit and mentally strong and enjoys cooking.

Bishop Charles was also the Vicar General of the Diocese of Johannesburg when Bishop Brian Germond was out of the Diocese and after his retirement until Bishop Steve Moreo was consecrated.
